The subtitle is not a loyal translation of German to English; it is rather a free adaptation of available subtitles of the movie found on Internet intertwined with subtitles of Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979) by Werner Herzog. Utilizing transformation rather than translation, a great share of the text is borrowed from Werner Herzog’s movie, which in itself was a remake of Murnau’s movie. As the title suggests this subtitle is mainly meant for a certain ritual of watching Nosferatu, which is at night and on a flight. However, this subtitle is carefully recommended for other nocturnal journeys reaching the destination before dawn.
The work relates to the history of cinema and the early silent horror film. If at the time of the release of Murnau’s film, watching a movie involved a ritual, a collective experience of being in a movie theater, where a projectionist would role the highly flammable nitrate film and an orchestra would play the soundtrack, today, moving image is immaterialized in both substance and space. The format of the viewing is no longer limited to the projection of the film on a cinema screen; now movies can be seen on a TV, computer or a phone screen and are not bound to a certain space; the screen can be placed on a food tray of an airplane or a train. Loaded with the story of Nosferatu, the nocturnal bloodsucking creature, the certain ritual assigned to this subtitle is an attempt to (re)introduce an experience: the fear of the unknown or the unfamiliar at the moment of arriving at a place during the nighttime.
Continuing a dialog with cinema and its altered ways of distribution and viewing, the subtitle is available for public use on Pirate Bay and Subscene, where the initial material for this work has come from.
