Projections

2010 (w. Sébastien Berthier)

Installation with two overheads each projecting an A4 OH-print, black & white

Dimensions variable

Projections sets its conceptual framework around the past conditions of population decrease in Sweden. It refers to the traumatic exodus of one fourth of the population for America in the late 1800 and early 1900. Anti-emmigration illustrations published in the Swedish periodical Läsning för folket (Reading for The People), 1869 are on display on two overheads side to side, meanwhile the projected image on the wall is the union of the two. By bringing back the phantasmagorical images of the New World imagined by the Swedish state and a fictive emigrant, the work engages in projection and phantasm intertwining the psychic and the social realm and by means of an object of representation – Native Americans – frames an already framed image of the other.
