Few Months Old Garden, 2007, DV PAL video loop, color, stereo sound, 1'50''
The video explores world of female children affected by adult lifestyle and fashion. A little girl dressed in pale colors especially pink and florid wrinkled garments in contrary with mainly bluish clothes of boys with guns and masculine superheroes on them, is a familiar picture. The notion of female identity and the starting point of becoming a standardized woman by a patriarchal society can be detected in these feminine elements which turn children, specially girls to minimized versions of adults. Apart from fashion and clothes industry that is mostly based on male gaze, it seems that society as a part of this patriarchal way of thinking, consciously/ unconsciously choose the same clothes for infants although their other choices are limited. The issue of gender and the necessity of showing one’s sex from the very early days of her life were focused on this video-loop as an everlasting tradition with close-ups of these garments and the sound of a broken music box which plays a familiar melody accompanied with musical dolls.
